How Minimatch Paint Matching Works

A transparent guide to the data behind the paint reference library.

Our paint records

Each paint reference records the manufacturer, paint range where available, product code where available, paint type, and a representative digital color value. The library is maintained as a practical starting point for miniature painters comparing paint ranges.

How alternatives are calculated

For each paint, Minimatch compares its available RGB color value with other records and orders nearby results by RGB distance. The result is a digital color similarity measure, not a claim that two paints have identical pigment, finish, opacity, coverage, or behavior.

What can change a physical result

Paint batches, primer color, thinning, finish, surface texture, lighting, camera processing, and screen calibration can all change the perceived result. Always test a swatch when matching a critical color.

Using the library

Open the alternative paint pages linked from each reference to compare the full record and their own nearest neighbors. This makes it easier to explore substitutions across brands instead of relying on a single one-way list.
